Pad Pressure Fix for Elektron Analog Rytm
A held pad's pressure reaches the sound's aftertouch and MIDI out during a retrig roll too, and CHROMATIC pads send their aftertouch on the note they played.
Module version 0.2.0-experimental. Base firmware: 1.74.
About this module
Two stock OS 1.74 gaps in what pad pressure does. During a retrig roll (RTRG held, or a pad set to ALWAYS ON), stock sends pad pressure only to the roll's velocity when VEL.CUR is OFF, and with RTRG held and VEL.CUR set it drops it altogether, so the sound's AFTERTOUCH modulation stops and MIDI out gets no poly pressure while a pad rolls. Pad Pressure Fix lets the pressure also do what it does on a plain held pad: the sound's aftertouch and MIDI poly pressure, as PAD DEST and PRESSURE DST pick. With VEL.CUR OFF, pressure still sets the roll's velocity as on stock; with VEL.CUR set, the curve sets it and pressure is aftertouch only, now with RTRG held as with ALWAYS ON. In CHROMATIC mode, stock also sends a held pad's poly pressure 24 semitones above the note it played; the fix sends it on the played note. It has no menu row: installed, it is on.
- Hold a pad in a retrig roll and its aftertouch targets move with your pressure, as on a plain held pad.
- MIDI out gets the pad's poly pressure during rolls too.
- VEL.CUR OFF: pressure also sets the roll's velocity, as stock. VEL.CUR set: the curve does, pressure is aftertouch only.
- CHROMATIC pads send their aftertouch on the note they played, not 24 semitones above.
- Three patched instructions and one patched call, no menu, no stored setting.
How to use it
- Give the BD sound an AFTERTOUCH target (SOUND SETTINGS > AFTERTOUCH, or SAMPLER + a knob with Quick Velocity+Aftertouch Assign), for example filter cutoff.
- Hold RTRG and hold the BD pad: it rolls. Press harder: the target moves, and with VEL.CUR OFF the roll also gets louder. Stock moved only the loudness.
- Set VEL.CUR in the RETRIG menu (hold RTRG, DOWN twice, RIGHT) and roll again: the curve sets the loudness, and pressure moves the aftertouch target only. Stock sent nothing with RTRG held.
- Turn ALWAYS ON for the track (hold RTRG, YES on the ALWAYS ON row) and hold the pad without RTRG: the same as with RTRG held.
- With a MIDI monitor on MIDI OUT or USB and PAD DEST and PRESSURE DST at INT+EXT (the default), the rolls send poly pressure. Press CHRO and hold a pad: its pressure goes out on the note it played.
Controls
- Pad held in a retrig roll
- RTRG held, or a pad set to ALWAYS ON. Pressure goes to the sound's AFTERTOUCH modulation and to MIDI poly pressure, as on a plain held pad. With VEL.CUR OFF it also sets the roll's velocity, as stock; with VEL.CUR set the curve does. Stock sent pressure only to the velocity, and with RTRG held and VEL.CUR set it sent it nowhere.
- Pad held in CHROMATIC mode
- Sends MIDI poly pressure on the note the pad's note on sent, until its note off; stock sends it 24 semitones higher and follows UP and DOWN during the hold.
Compatibility notes
- Built for OS 1.74 only, with core-ar2 0.7.
- 0.2.0 ran on a unit beside the author's other modules (PP01), MIDI out logged; 0.1.0's CHROMATIC fix ran alone as CA02 (TESTING.md).
- During a roll with VEL.CUR OFF one squeeze moves both the roll's velocity and the aftertouch targets; set VEL.CUR (1 is almost flat) for aftertouch alone.
- With RTRG held, pressure also reaches what is under the RETRIG menu, as without RTRG: the pads, and in PERF mode the performance pads, whose pressure now moves the performance while RTRG is held (stock froze it).
- A receiver that relied on stock's CHROMATIC poly pressure 24 semitones above the note sees it move to the played note.
- MIDI in, the retrig timing and pads outside a roll and outside CHROMATIC mode are untouched.
Test evidence
rytm-emu on OS 1.74: during rolls (RTRG held, ALWAYS ON, VEL.CUR OFF and set, plain and CHROMATIC pads) stock writes no aftertouch and sends no poly pressure; with the fix every case writes the sound's aftertouch and sends poly pressure, and VEL.CUR OFF still sets the roll's velocity. CHROMATIC pads send pressure on the played note (0.1.0, unit-tested as CA02). On a unit (PP01, the author's 16-module set): poly pressure went out in every roll case and on CHROMATIC's played notes, as reported and logged (TESTING.md).
