Sample Playback Rate for Elektron Analog Rytm
FIN's knob becomes RATE, sound by sound: pure sample speed down to a stop and into reverse, like the Octatrack's RATE on PTCH. Tap the knob to switch.
Module version 0.1.1-experimental. Base firmware: 1.74.
About this module
Sample Playback Rate gives a sample a pure speed control: no time stretch, just the sample played faster or slower, down to a stop and on into reverse. Switch it on for a sound in SOUND SETTINGS with SMP RATE, and FIN's knob on the SAMPLE page reads RATE, +63 to -64: +63 plays at normal speed, 0 stops, -64 plays backward at normal speed, in a straight line between them, as the Octatrack's RATE with its setting on PTCH. Stock's pitch stops at a quarter of the speed. A trig below 0 starts from END. The setting saves with the sound and is off by default, so a sound plays stock until you ask.
- Slow a sample to a dead stop and run it backward from one knob.
- Exactly the Octatrack's range: +63 is 1x, 0 stops, -64 is -1x.
- Per sound, saved with it, off by default: every other sound stays stock.
- Takes parameter locks: one trig backward from END, the next forward.
- Works beside LOP PIPO from Pipo Loop, without needing it.
How to use it
- Put a long sample on a track, with LOP ON. Press SMPL and tap encoder B: FIN's knob reads RATE.
- Play the pad. Turn RATE down from +63: the sample slows like a stopping turntable and rests at 0.
- Keep turning below 0: it runs backward, smoothly through the stop. A new trig now starts from END.
- Hold a trig in GRID RECORDING and turn RATE to lock it on that step: a trig at -63 plays backward from END, and the next trig plays forward again.
Controls
- SMP RATE
- SOUND SETTINGS, under SMP:. OFF: stock. ON: FIN is RATE on this sound. Saved with the sound. Switching on takes FIN +0 to RATE +63; switching off takes RATE +63 to FIN +0; other values stay.
- Tap of encoder B
- SAMPLE page. A short press with no turn turns SMP RATE over. Not with a trig, FUNC or NO held, or a pad held in scene or performance mode, and not in running live recording.
- RATE
- SAMPLE page, encoder B, on a sound with SMP RATE on. +63 to -64: speed scales by |RATE| / 64, backward below 0, and +63 is exactly 1x. TUN still multiplies it. Locks and LFOs reach it as FIN.
Compatibility notes
- Built for OS 1.74 only, with core-ar2 0.7.
- Run on a unit by the author as SP03 to SP13 (TESTING.md); two voices together, performance and scene locks and sound browser load are from rytm-emu or not run there.
- Saving to and loading from SOUND MANAGER is not confirmed on a unit: stored sounds often gave ERROR there, RATE or not, and one that loaded came back with SMP RATE clear (README).
- RATE never goes above 1x by itself; TUN does, to stock's ceiling of about 4x.
- On stock OS a saved sound plays FIN as FIN: RATE +63 is about a semitone sharp.
- With LOP OFF, once the sample has played out, changing RATE does not bring it back: trig again.
- A change of direction on a looping voice waits until it is 32 frames clear of STA and END; a trig does not wait.
- LFO destination lists and other screens still say FIN.
- Sound locks, scene locks and performance locks have not been run.
Test evidence
rytm-emu on OS 1.74, 23,777-frame ramp: rate word exact at every RATE tried, trig below 0 starts from END, row off sample-identical to the core alone, with Pipo Loop no clicks at any speed or across flips and sweeps; the tap's cases. Hardware, as reported by the author: SP03 to SP13, and LF01 (0.1.1 in a 16-module set: RATE works; idle block 72.9 % -> 71.1 % with two other modules' fixes) (TESTING.md).
